Doolin

According to my Lonely planet guide of Ireland Doolin “gets plenty of press and chatter as a centre or Irish traditional music, owing to a couple of pubs that have sessions through the year.”

The guide also states that visitors to this music-Mecca might exclaim “there is no there here!” which was just what me, Henrik and Michelle exclaimed when we got of the bus from Limerick yesterday.

There just seemed to be some horses, some cows and some houses scattered around on the emerald fields of Ireland. Basically, it looked more boring then listening to a weather forecaster having sex.

Anyway we got of the bus, checked in to the hostel, ate some pizza and took a walk to the pier. Now that was the turning point of the day. It’s really difficult not to be overwhelmed by the Irish nature. Especially when you are faced by the awesome power of the Atlantic wind hammering in your face, waves the size of small boats throwing themselves against the rocks in a display of pure greatness. This is what Einstein talked about when he said nature could make him feel religious.

If you were to continue going west the next stop would be America. We wandered on the shore and the hills adjacent the Atlantic for an hour or so, and then we went for a Guinness.

After that we spent some time at the hostel where Henrik was able to beat both me and Michelle at chess. When I lost I just nooded and congratulated him. When Michelle lost she got quite upset and demanded a rematch. Couse she couldn't lose. She just couldn't. Henrik refused and told her it was time for another Guinness. I agreed with him.

We went to a pub, ate some traditional Irish stew and watched a local band perform what I would like to describe as a mixture between Irish folk music and jazz. It seemed improvised and alive. The guy playing the banjo was awesomely fast and never missed a beat. Impressive.

Anyway. We had a good time, stayed the night and went home today.

Since my Internet connection still is as slow as a motherfucker I can’t post some of the photographs I took during the trip. But as fast as the connection is up to speed there will be pictures.
